The Premier League is reportedly set to return within weeks amid the coronavirus pandemic, having been suspended since mid-March due to the ongoing crisis.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has seen matches in England's top flight put on hold since mid-March, leaving the remainder of the season shrouded in uncertainty as the virus sweeps across the globe.

However, according to The Sun, prime minister Boris Johnson has been informed on plans to restart the league behind closed doors, and allowing the Premier League to reach a conclusion is a priority for sporting bodies and government ministers.

The report claims that games could be free-to-air so fans are able to watch their teams in action without visiting friends who have Sky or BT Sport, and the return of sporting events would give the nation a huge morale boost amid the ongoing crisis.

However, sports would supposedly have to adhere to strict policies in order to ensure player and staff safety, such as regular testing for participants and being able to maintain social distancing.

It was announced earlier today that the Eredivisie, the elite level of football in the Netherlands, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
