Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek get the goals as West Ham United down Sheffield United at the London Stadium.

West Ham United returned to winning ways in the Premier League thanks to a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh off the back of their EFL Cup triumph over Lincoln City in midweek, West Ham headed into this weekend's encounter on a high against a Sheffield United side who were thumped 8-0 by Newcastle United in their last outing.

David Moyes's men dominated proceedings early on and had the first real chance of the game through Tomas Soucek, but the midfielder blasted his effort well over the bar.

As seen on several occasions this season already, West Ham threatened from a set-piece scenario as Jarrod Bowen rose highest to head James Ward-Prowse's delivery towards goal, only for Wesley Foderingham to pull off a fine stop.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure and got their reward in the 24th minute following some lovely work from Vladimir Coufal and Jarrod Bowen with the latter finding the bottom corner.

Having now taken the lead, West Ham took on a more settled approach but still retained their attacking threat which led to a second of the game 37 minutes in.

Soucek was presented with his second opportunity of the game after he was picked out by Michail Antonio and the Czech Republic international was not going to be denied this time as he found the back of the net for a second game running.

That was the last meaningful action of the first half, wrapping up a good 45 minutes for West Ham in front of their ever-bubbling home support.

In stark contrast to the opening period, Sheffield United started to exert themselves right after the half-time whistle and unsurprisingly so as they plotted a route back into the contest.

Anel Ahmedhodzic came close to halving the deficit just shy of the hour mark but Alphonse Areola was more than up to the task having been called into action for the first time.

Areola remained a spectator for the subsequent phase of the second half and was largely uninvolved until the 81st minute when he showed great reflexes to keep out Oliver McBurnie.

West Ham held firm for the remaining nine minutes of normal time and a further eight minutes of additional time to record a first league clean sheet of the campaign.

Today's win sees West Ham move up to seventh in the Premier League table, while Sheffield United remain bottom of the standings after seven matches.
