On this day: David Beckham scores first Manchester United goal

Nineteen years ago today, David Beckham scored his first ever goal for Manchester United in a 4-0 victory over Galatasaray.

Back in 1992, a number of Manchester United's FA Youth Cup-winning side had displayed the potential that they could one day represent Sir Alex Ferguson's senior side.

Two years later, Ryan Giggs was already regular, while the likes of Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Keith Gillespie, Paul Scholes, Simon Davies, John O'Kane and David Beckham had all been given opportunities in the League Cup.

The latter of those players had made four appearances for the club prior to United's Champions League group encounter against Galatasaray 19 years ago today.

Due to the fact that competition rules permitted Ferguson to use just three foreign players within his starting lineup, it meant that he had to turn to some of the 'Class of 92' for the visit of the Turkish outfit to Old Trafford.

Along with Butt, Davies and Neville, Beckham was named in the side for what would be his Champions League debut.

The hosts got off to a positive start when Davies, who was making his second appearance at European level, fired them ahead with just three minutes on the clock following a cross from Neville.

Then, with 38 minutes played, Beckham would score what would be the first of his 85 goals for the Red Devils. Galatasaray failed to clear the danger sufficiently and when the ball fell to the youngster on the edge of the area, he sent it into the bottom corner of the net.

Shortly after the restart United put the match beyond the away side's reach as Roy Keane converted a cross from Eric Cantona, before in the closing stages the Frenchman's pass was turned into his own net by Galatasaray defender Bulent Korkmaz.

Despite the hefty victory, it wasn't enough for United to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. They finished on six points alongside Barcelona, but the Spaniards advanced with group winners Gothenburg by virtue of having a superior goal difference.
