A Premier League goalscoring record was broken in Manchester City's 3-1 victory over Brentford on Monday evening.

A Premier League goalscoring record was broken in Manchester City's 3-1 away win over Brentford on Monday.

Brentford striker Neal Maupay opened the scoring in the 21st minute, before Phil Foden restored parity in first-half stoppage time.

Foden went on to register two more goals in the second half to wrap up his hat-trick and a sixth consecutive league victory for Man City.

Not only did Foden help his side claim all three points, but he also contributed to a Premier League goalscoring record.

The most recent round of Premier League fixtures produced 45 goals across the 10 games, making it the highest-scoring matchday since the 20-team league was introduced in the 1995-96 season.

Man City's win over Brentford was one of eight games to produce at least four goals over the course of matchday 23.

The only two games that failed to hit the four-goal mark as Bournemouth's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest and Manchester United's 3-0 win over West Ham United.

Meanwhile, the highest-scoring game over the weekend took place at St James' Park where Newcastle United played out a thrilling 4-4 draw with Luton Town.

Although a new record was set for the 20-team era, the overall Premier League record still belongs to matchday 42 in the 1992-93 campaign when 53 goals were scored across 12 matches in the top flight.

As well as contributing to a free-scoring round of fixtures, Pep Guardiola's side can also be proud of the fact that they have become just the second team to win four consecutive Premier League away games having trailed in each of them.

Their city rivals Manchester United previously achieved the feat in 2020 when they came from behind to win six straight away league matches.

Unfortunately for Brentford, they have now dropped 26 points from leading positions this season, which is more than any other side in the top flight.

While the Bees are in 15th position in the Premier League table, Man City are sitting in second place and just two points behind leaders Liverpool.
