The BBC is "waiting in the wings" to start production on the next two series of Race Across The World once the threat of coronavirus has subsided.

BBC Two controller Patrick Holland has said that the broadcaster is "waiting in the wings" to get started on a new series of Race Across The World.

The reality show sees five pairs of contestants embark on an epic journey between two locations with only a limited budget and without travelling by plane at any point.

The second series finished last week, with Holland saying that its audience had "grown and grown and grown throughout the crisis" to an estimated 5 million viewers by its conclusion.

The BBC already picked up the show for a third run and a celebrity spinoff last year but production is now on hold due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which has affected all corners of the globe.

"We need to wait for the advice in terms of travel and social distancing," Holland said at the Edinburgh TV Festival. "Of course we love the series. It is an astonishing success.

"But the most important thing is everyone is safe with the making of that programme."

A bonus reunion episode of the show will air Sunday at 8pm on BBC Two.
