ITV chief casts doubt on Love Island 2021

ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall suggests that Love Island may not return this summer after all.

ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall has admitted that it will be "hard" to get ratings banker Love Island back on air this summer.

The ITV2 dating show was cancelled last year as the coronavirus pandemic took hold, but the deployment of a vaccine and the development of strict health and safety protocols for TV production make a new series this year much more likely.

Talking to Radio 4's Media Show, however, McCall said: "We will want to put Love Island on air because it's been off air for a little while [after] we didn't do it last summer.

"We're looking at all our options at the moment because the pandemic makes that hard."

The show is normally filmed in a picturesque villa on the Spanish island of Mallorca, but producers are said to be looking at a number of UK-based alternatives - including Barry Island in Wales - if travel to Spain is deemed too risky.

More than 100,000 Brits are thought to have applied to take part in this year's series.
