Newly-appointed Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer window.

Newly-appointed Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly identified Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as one of his priority summer transfer targets.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the Dutchman would depart Ajax at the end of the season to take over from Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford dugout.

Rangnick, who is in line to take on an advisory role, has suggested that as many as 10 first-team additions could be made before the start of 2022-23.

However, according to Sport, Ten Hag wants United to push hard to secure the signing of De Jong as he bids to freshen up his midfield.

While the report adds that neither Barcelona or De Jong currently want to end their partnership at Camp Nou, Ten Hag is keen to tempt his compatriot into a switch with the promise of being at the centre of his plans going forward.

Although the 24-year-old is currently a regular in Xavi's first XI, it has been widely reported that Franck Kessie will be arriving from AC Milan on a free transfer.

Nevertheless, De Jong still has over four years left on his contract, a potential stumbling block when it comes to United arriving at the negotiating table.
