Manchester United and West Ham United will pay tribute to The Queen ahead of their respective European fixtures this evening.

The longest-reigning British monarch in history passed away "peacefully" at the age of 96 at Balmoral this afternoon in news communicated to the world by Buckingham Palace at 6.30pm.

Man Utd are at home to Spanish side Real Sociedad in the Europa League tonight, while West Ham are opening their Europa Conference League group fixtures with a tie against FCSB of Romania at the London Stadium.

With both fixtures due to kick off at 8pm, a joint decision was taken between the FA and UEFA for the games to go ahead as planned, although both will feature a minute's silence before kickoff and players will wear black armbands.

A statement from Man Utd said: "Manchester United shares the sorrow of the entire nation following the announcement from Buckingham Palace on the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen.

"The club recognises her immense contribution to public life, including sport, both here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world.

"Everyone connected with Manchester United joins the wider football family in sending our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to The Royal Family."

The Hammers said: "West Ham United is deeply saddened by the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

"Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the Royal Family and we join the nation in mourning her loss. Rest In Peace, Your Majesty."

Arsenal, who were in action at FC Zurich when the news broke, held a minute's silence prior to kickoff of the game's second half.

The UK will now enter an official period of mourning - expected to last for 10 days - which could result in sporting fixtures being postponed this weekend and next week.
