The hosts started brightly, putting the Magpies to the sword during a promising first 20 minutes.

Raheem Sterling was the first to have a go at goal, wriggling free of a challenge before letting fly from around 25 yards out. However, Tim Krul saw it safely past the post.

Luis Suarez then forced the Dutchman to make a save when he raced into the box. The Uruguayan drilled the ball straight at Krul and Newcastle managed to escape.

The visitors stunned Anfield by taking the lead two minutes before the break.

Hatem Ben Arfa blazed past Jose Enrique down the right before clipping the ball to Yohan Cabaye at the back post. The Frenchman took one touch before blasting past Brad Jones with his right foot to earn a half-time lead for the Magpies.

Liverpool continued to dominate possession in the second period as they searched for a route back into the game.

It finally came in the 67th minute when Suarez latched onto a long ball over the top from Enrique. He took the ball down on his chest before rounding Krul and tapping into an empty net, capping a wonderful individual effort.

Suarez then nearly crafted a winner, jinking his way into the Newcastle area before teeing up Jonjo Shelvey, only for the midfielder to flap at the chance.

Fabrizio Coloccini was shown a red card in the 86th minute for a foul on Suarez, much to Alan Pardew's chagrin.

Liverpool maintained the upper hand until the final whistle, but could not force a winner. The result sees the Reds move up to 12th, while Alan Pardew's men remain 10th.
