Birmingham City are reportedly prepared to rival Leeds United in the race to sign Liverpool youngster Mateusz Musialowski.

Birmingham City reportedly hold an interest in signing Liverpool youngster Mateusz Musialowski.

When Blues appointed Wayne Rooney earlier in the season, the plan had been for an influx of additions to arrive at St Andrew's at the start of 2024.

Instead, Birmingham's hierarchy opted to replace Rooney with Tony Mowbray, who will now be backed in the transfer market for the remainder of the month.

Over the weekend, Andre Dozzell was signed from Queens Park Rangers on a loan deal for the rest of the season - Birmingham's first piece of business in January.

While at least one fresh face may eventually be signed for the defence, it appears that Mowbray has his eye on bringing in another creative player.

According to the Daily Mail, Birmingham are eager to win the race to sign Musialowski.

The winger has long been tipped to eventually make an impact at Anfield, but he is yet to make an appearance for the senior side.

However, three goals and one assist came from four outings in this season's EFL Trophy, while the same numbers have been posted from seven Premier League 2 appearances.

With his contract due to expire in the summer, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will extend his terms into another year, the possibility being that the Merseyside giants could cash in on the Poland Under-21 international.

Nevertheless, Musialowski is said to be attracting interest from other Championship sides, including Leeds United who would likely see the prospect as a squad member over first choice.

The report does not specify whether Birmingham or Leeds would aim to complete a permanent or temporary transfer, with that dependent on any decisions made by Liverpool in due course.

Jurgen Klopp may also be open to retaining Musialowski's services for the remainder of the season due to the long-term knee injury to Ben Doak and recent hamstring problem sustained by Mohamed Salah.
