Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares is reportedly close to becoming Mikel Arteta's first summer signing at Arsenal.

Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares is reportedly close to becoming Mikel Arteta's first summer signing at Arsenal.

An agreement has allegedly been reached between both clubs for the 21-year-old to move to north London for a fee in the region of £7m, with a further £1.5m in add-ons.

According to Goal, Tavares is now set to undergo a medical with the Gunners before the deal can be finalised and announced in the coming days.

Tavares is set to provide competition at left-back for Kieran Tierney, who recently signed a new five-year deal to stay with the club.

With Sead Kolasinac having left the club, the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Patrick van Aanholt had been linked with a move to Arsenal, however the club have decided to move for the Portuguese Under-21 international instead.

Tavares played 25 times for Benfica during the 2020-21 campaign, including 14 appearances in the Liga Nos and five in the Europa League.
