Richard Ayoade to host virtual BAFTA TV Awards

Comedian Richard Ayoade is to host a "socially-distanced" version of the BAFTA TV Awards in July, it is announced.

Richard Ayoade has been named as the host of this year's BAFTA TV Awards, which are still going ahead despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The prestigious awards ceremony was originally due to take place this month but was postponed after the UK entered lockdown in an effort to slow the spread of the killer disease.

Now the BBC has announced that the awards have been rescheduled for an "as-live" broadcast on BBC One on the evening of Friday, July 31.

Ayoade will oversee proceedings from a "closed studio", while the winners will be invited to accept their awards virtually.

In a short statement, the comedian said: "I am as surprised as you are that this is still going ahead."

Kate Phillips, the BBC's entertainment commissioner, added: "I'm really pleased we're able to bring the BAFTA TV Awards 2020 to BBC One this July. As always they will celebrate the best of British TV throughout the year, as well highlight the great programming and memorable moments that have entertained so many throughout recent tough times."

Nominations will be announced next Thursday, June 4.
