BBC keen to make new drama about Dominic Cummings

The BBC's head of drama reveals that he is keen to commission a drama based on the lockdown row involving Dominic Cummings.

The BBC's head of drama Piers Wenger has revealed that he has been receiving pitches for a drama based on Boris Johnson's special advisor Dominic Cummings.

Cummings was at the forefront of the media's coronavirus coverage last week after it emerged that he had appeared to break lockdown rules several times, including making a visit to Barnard Castle near his hometown of Durham.

The 48-year-old was a key figure in the successful campaign to get the UK to vote to leave the European Union in 2016 and was subsequently played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the acclaimed Channel 4 film Brexit: The Uncivil War.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Wenger said that he is keen to commission The Road to Barnard Castle: The Dominic Cummings Story, potentially with Cumberbatch reprising the lead role, but only if the project is "in the right hands".

An investigation by officers working for Durham Constabulary last week found that Cummings may have made a "minor breach" of lockdown rules by visiting the castle but decided that no further action would be necessary.
