Ofcom launches a consultation over the BBC's plans to relaunch BBC Three as a linear TV channel in January.

TV regulator Ofcom has launched a consultation over proposals to relaunch BBC Three as a linear TV channel.

The youth-aimed service moved to an online-only proposition in February 2016 but earlier this year the corporation outlined a plan to restore it as a linear service from January 2022.

The BBC has several hoops to jump through before the channel's relaunch goes ahead, however, including an Ofcom assessment of its potential impact on the market.

Inviting feedback from rival broadcasters today, Ofcom said that it would be in a position to determine the next steps of the proposals in early August.

BBC Three's relaunch will coincide with a significant boost in its budget to around £75 million a year.
