Mainz 05 and Japan forward Yoshinori Muto is set to become Newcastle United's fifth summer signing, subject to being issued a work permit.

Japan forward Yoshinori Muto has passed a medical and agreed personal terms with Newcastle United ahead of a prospective move from German club Mainz 05.

The 26-year-old, who has netted twice in 25 international appearances, impressed during the World Cup as the Samurai Blue reached the round of 16.

At club level, Muto has scored 20 goals in 66 Bundesliga matches since joining Mainz from FC Tokyo in 2015 for £2.5m.

"Newcastle United can confirm that Japan international forward Yoshinori Muto has been on Tyneside today ahead of a proposed move to the club," the Magpies confirmed in a statement.

"An agreement has been formalised between the Magpies and Muto's current club, FSV Mainz 05, and the player has undergone a medical and agreed personal terms.

"The transfer is now subject to the player being issued with a Governing Body Endorsement which will be determined at a hearing to take place later next week."

Muto is set to be Newcastle's fifth summer signing following the arrivals of Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-yueng and Kenedy.
