Stephen Warnock: 'Liverpool should move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang'

Stephen Warnock urges former club Liverpool to move for Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has urged the Reds to move for Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during this summer's transfer window.

The Gabon international has enjoyed a terrific 2019-20 campaign for the Gunners, scoring 22 times in 36 appearances in all competitions, including 19 goals in the Premier League.

Aubameyang's existing deal at the Emirates Stadium is due to expire next summer, though, and there remains widespread speculation surrounding his future.

Warnock, who represented Liverpool between 2002 and 2007, believes that the 31-year-old would be a worthwhile signing for his former club.

"If I was Jurgen Klopp, I'd be going for him with a year left on his contract, and you're wanting a goalscorer who can either come off the bench or play on a regular basis," Warnock told BBC Sport.

"He will challenge the front three, he doesn't need time to settle, you know he's proven, he knows the manager and the manager knows what he's about. Aubameyang will be on big wages, but he won't cost you big money to get him out with a year left on his contract and the age that he's at.

"Would Aubameyang like to go to a club like Liverpool, Manchester City or Manchester United? From his point of view, being a squad player at 31, competing for Champions League, competing for leagues, and he will win some trophies going to one of those three clubs - that's what he wants at the end of his career.

"And when you retire, to have that association with one of those clubs, as well as Arsenal, as well as Borussia Dortmund, what a CV you've got then."

Following Wednesday's 4-0 win over Norwich City, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said that he is still hopeful that Aubameyang will sign a new deal at the club.
