Manchester United have revealed that number two goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is facing two weeks on the sidelines due to a muscular problem.

The 25-year-old made the move to Old Trafford from Fenerbahce last summer, penning a four-year contract with the 20-time English champions, while there is also the option to extend the deal for a further 12 months.

Bayindir has only made one appearance for the Red Devils this season, playing the full 90 minutes of the 4-2 success over Newport County in the FA Cup at the end of January while number one Andre Onana was with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Turkey international was surprisingly overlooked in the EFL Cup earlier this term, and he is unlikely to receive action in the final months of the campaign unless Onana picks up a fitness problem.

Bayindir was expected to be on the bench for Man United's FA Cup quarter-final with Liverpool on Sunday before heading off to link up with the Turkey squad for their internationals with Hungary and Austria.

However, Man United have revealed that the goalkeeper has suffered a muscular strain, which will see him spend the next couple of weeks in the treatment room.

"Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will miss Sunday's Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool due to injury," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The 25-year-old, who made his Reds debut in the fourth round at Newport County, has a muscle strain which is expected to keep him out for around two weeks."

Tom Heaton will therefore be on the bench against Liverpool, with the experienced goalkeeper recovering from a muscular problem of his own.

Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Anthony Martial remain unavailable for selection, but Rasmus Hojlund, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all in line to return to the squad against Liverpool.

Mason Mount is also back in full first-team training after a lengthy period out with a calf problem, and the England international is now closing in on a return to action.

The FA Cup represents Man United's only realistic chance of securing silverware this season, and they will be bidding to progress to the semi-finals of the competition this weekend.

Erik ten Hag's side are fighting for a Champions League finish in the Premier League table, meanwhile, currently sitting sixth, six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand, and eight from Aston Villa in fourth.
