Manchester United midfielder Fred voted Premier League's worst signing

Manchester United midfielder Fred is named as the Premier League's worst signing of the 2018-19 season, having made only 17 top-flight appearances in his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Fred has been named the Premier League's worst signing of the 2018-19 campaign in Sports Mole's Reader Awards.

The Red Devils beat off competition from local rivals Manchester City to bring the Brazilian to Old Trafford last summer, but he quickly fell down the pecking order under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Signed for £53m, Fred made just 17 Premier League appearances throughout the campaign and only started six games after the turn of the year.

Arsenal's Denis Suarez, who failed to start a single game for the club after joining on loan from Barcelona in January, was second in the voting for the worst signing of the season, while his Gunners teammate Stephan Lichtsteiner also made the top three.

Fulham's unsuccessful spending spree resulted in them having four players in the final shortlist, with Lazar Markovic garnering the most votes, while Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke was also in the running.
