Barcelona president Joan Laporta says that contract talks with Lionel Messi are "going well" as the club battle to keep hold of him.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said that contract talks with Lionel Messi are "going well".

The Argentina international's existing deal with the Catalan giants is due to expire at the end of June, meaning that, as it stands, he has played his last game for the club.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain continue to be linked with the attacker, but various reports have claimed that Messi is now leaning towards signing fresh terms at Camp Nou.

Laporta has offered a positive update on Barca's battle to keep hold of the 33-year-old but has insisted that "it's not done".

"The Messi issue is going well, but it's not done," Laporta said at a press conference. "Messi wants Barcelona very much. We are doing everything possible within our means.

"Although we all know that he is a coveted player, we have the perception that, on both sides, we are preparing everything that is necessary, within the club's means, for him to stay."

Messi enjoyed another impressive campaign for Barca in 2020-21, scoring 38 times and registering 14 assists in 47 appearances in all competitions.
