Pep Guardiola plays down chances of signing new striker in January

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola plays down the club's chances of bringing in a new striker in January given the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola does not think that the Citizens will be able to fund a move for a new striker in January.

Speculation continues to mount over Sergio Aguero's future, with the 32-year-old - who is currently struggling with a knee injury - about to enter the final six months of his Etihad deal.

Gabriel Jesus has also been absent for a large portion of the campaign, with Ferran Torres often being used as a makeshift centre-forward for City, who have failed to hit their usual heights in front of goal.

However, Guardiola has claimed that the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic will hinder any chances of January arrivals, telling reporters: "I don't think so because the economic financial situation for all clubs around the world is what it is. All the clubs struggle and we are no exception."

The Premier League giants will supposedly be in the market for a new frontman in the summer, though, with funds potentially being made available to complete a sensational swoop for wantaway Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi.

Borussia Dortmund's Erling Braut Haaland has also been mentioned as a target for 2021, with Aguero being tipped to return to his native Argentina.
