Manchester City will hope to equal a 34-year-old record when they face Brentford on the final day of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.

Manchester City are hoping to equal a 34-year-old record held by Liverpool when they face Brentford on Sunday.

Ahead of the final weekend of the 2022-23 campaign, City have already secured the title, that feat being achieved with three matches remaining.

Since being crowned champions last Saturday, City have posted a 1-0 victory over Chelsea and been held to a 1-1 draw away at Brighton & Hove Albion.

With an FA Cup final against Manchester United and Champions League final versus Inter Milan to follow over the next two weeks, Pep Guardiola will have one eye on that double-header when selecting his side for the meeting with Brentford.

Nevertheless, City will head into the encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium with the opportunity to match a record that has been in place since 1988-89.

No team has recorded six away wins in London in a league campaign since Liverpool recorded half-a-dozen victories in the capital 34 years ago.

In six such matches this season, City have prevailed on five occasions, only suffering defeat to Tottenham Hotspur by a 1-0 scoreline in February.

However, from Brentford's perspective, they head into the encounter looking to record just their second-ever league double over City, the first occurrence coming in 1937-38.

Furthermore, only two other clubs have ever registered a double over City in a season where they have been crowned Premier League champions.

Chelsea won twice versus City during the 2013-14 campaign while Spurs prevailed in both fixtures during 2021-22.

Brentford will be facing opponents in City who have won their final league fixture of the season six times in successions, not suffering defeat since a loss to Norwich City a decade ago.

While the fixture is meaningless for City, Brentford can still secure Europa Conference League football if they beat the champions and each of Aston Villa and Spurs fail to beat Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds United respectively.
