Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that his side can still reach the knockout stages of the Champions League despite drawing their second game against Spartak Moscow.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his side can still reach the knockout stages of the Champions League despite drawing their second group stage game away to Spartak Moscow last night.

The Reds were determined to secure victory at the second time of asking in Russia after falling short at home to Sevilla two weeks ago, but Klopp's men were frustrated once more as they played out a 1-1 stalemate on Tuesday night.

Liverpool had gone behind when Moscow midfielder Fernando beat goalkeeper Loris Karius with an accurate free kick, but Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho managed to pull one back before the break.

"We are strong enough to qualify. The door is open but we have to walk through. We can see a bit of light. We have to stay cool, work hard and we will be alright," Klopp told reporters at his post-match press conference.

"The only thing is to go through the group and that is still possible for us. We would have won both games but didn't, and that is our fault. There were a lot of good things, it was not a good result.

"It is a big question why we did not win. We were unlucky, there were good saves from both goalkeepers at the decisive moment. That is how football is - the only way you can change it is to do it again and do it again."

Liverpool travel to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday in an encounter that sees former Reds manager Rafael Benitez face his former side.
