Fiorentina edge seven-goal thriller against Palermo

Fiorentina claim a 4-3 victory over Palermo in Serie A to win their first match of 2015.

Fiorentina have bounced back from two winless games in Serie A to beat Palermo 4-3 in a thrilling encounter this afternoon.

The hosts were denied a goal in the opening five minutes when Mario Gomez slotted in Manuel Pasqual's pass from close range, but it was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

Fiorentina were able to make the breakthrough in the 20th minute as Pasqual was picked out on the edge of the box to guide a low shot into the corner.

They almost grabbed a second five minutes later, but Borja Valero clipped an effort onto the bar, with Gomez unable to turn in the rebound.

Vincenzo Montella's side were in complete control and they were inches away from going into the break with a two-goal lead when David Pizarro struck an effort against the post.

Six minutes into the second half, the Viola finally extended their lead as Jose Basanta slotted in from close range after Parma had failed to clear a corner.

As the game approached the hour mark, Robin Quaison pulled a goal back for Palermo when he guided in Andrea Belotti's low cross.

Two minutes later, the visitors drew level as a poor back-pass from Pizarro was cut out by Quaison, who ran through to place a strike past Ciprian Tatarusanu.

It took Fiorentina just three minutes to regain their lead as Juan Cuadrado arrived at the front post to meet Pasqual's cross and turn the ball home.

The Viola grabbed a fourth goal 10 minutes later when Joaquin curled a strike from the edge of the box into the top corner that left the keeper rooted to the spot.

Belotti's penalty nine minutes from time ensured that it would be a nervy finish for the hosts, but they managaed to hold on and secure their first points of 2015.
