Mark Sampson 'to quit' as England Women manager

England Women manager Mark Sampson is due to step down from his role this afternoon.

England Women manager Mark Sampson is expected to step down from his role this afternoon amid the continued allegations of racism against him.

The 34-year-old has been cleared by two separate investigations after former Lionesses striker Eni Aluko alleged that in 2015 he had asked mixed-race midfielder Drew Spence how many times she had been arrested.

The allegations have resurfaced over the last week, however, after Spence gave a statement to back up Aluko's claims, while revealing that she had never been interviewed as part of the two investigations that cleared Sampson.

Sampson has continually denied the allegation, as well as a further claim from Aluko that he once advised her family not to attend a game as they might have brought the Ebola virus with them, but according to BBC News, the FA is now expected to announce his departure at a press conference this afternoon.

A former youth coach with Cardiff City and Swansea City, Sampson took on the England role in 2013 and led the side to the semi-finals of the World Cup and the European Championships.

Sampson was in charge last night as England began their 2019 World Cup qualification with a 6-0 rout of Russia.
