Timo Werner: Five stats to get Chelsea fans excited about new signing

Following Chelsea's announcement confirming the signing of Timo Werner, Sports Mole looks at five statistics to get their supporters excited about their new man.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig in a deal worth a reported £47.5m.

The 24-year-old will link up with the Blues in July after the German Bundesliga season comes to an end, meaning that he will miss the remainder of Leipzig's Champions League campaign.

Werner is understood to have agreed a five-year deal worth around £170,000 a week at Stamford Bridge after the Blues triggered the release clause in his contract.

The Germany international has enjoyed a prolific campaign for Leipzig, and here Sports Mole looks at five statistics which will get Chelsea fans excited about their new arrival.

The headline statistic most Chelsea fans will be looking for is Werner's goal output, and they will not be disappointed.

Werner's thumping strike against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday night was his 32nd of the season across all competitions, with 26 of those coming in the Bundesliga.

In the race for the European Golden Boot Werner is only behind Robert Lewandowski and Lazio's Ciro Immobile, who have scored 31 goals and 27 goals in the league respectively this season.

CREATIVE TALENT

Werner is not just a goalscorer, he is a creator too.

The German has registered eight assists to add to his 26 league goals to put him on 34 direct goal involvements in 32 Bundesliga matches this season - a tally bettered only by Lionel Messi.

Across all competitions Werner has 13 assists too, meaning that he has had a hand in 45 goals in 43 games in 2019-20.

AWAY DAY SPECIALIST

No player in Europe's top five leagues has scored more away goals than Werner's incredible tally of 15 this season - more than even Lewandowski.

Indeed, the majority of Werner's league strikes have come on the road this term, although Chelsea have fared well away from home this season anyway.

Only Manchester City have scored more goals than Frank Lampard's side on their travels, and the addition of Werner is only likely to add to that threat.

IMPORTANT GOALS

It is all well and good scoring lots of goals, but arguably an even more important statistic is how decisive those goals have been.

Werner stacks up well in that department too, earning more points for his side than any other player in the Bundesliga this season - again, even more than Lewandowski, despite scoring five goals fewer than Bayern Munich's star striker.

Add those 16 points to Chelsea's tally this season and they would be in second place; take them away from Leipzig and they would plummet from third to seventh, out of Champions League contention.

DYNAMIC STYLE

Lampard is building a young, exciting and dynamic team at Chelsea and Werner certainly fits the ball.

The 24-year-old can score all types of goals and is far away from merely a poacher, relying on his electric pace to get behind defences before finishing with unerring accuracy.

The graphic above shows that he is also adept at making goals for himself, topping the charts in Europe's top five leagues for goal involvements after a ball carry.
