On this day: James Hayter nets record-breaking hat-trick

Back on this day in 2004, James Hayter took just 140 seconds to score a hat-trick during Bournemouth's thrashing of Wrexham.

Eleven years ago today and with their son still sat among the substitutes, James Hayter's parents decided to leave Bournemouth's clash against Wrexham early to ensure that they did not miss the ferry back to the Isle of Wight.

After all, the hosting Cherries were cruising to victory thanks to unanswered goals from Stephen Purches, Warren Cummings and Warren Feeney - surely the drama was over? Not so!

There were just six minutes of the contest remaining when Hayter, with his family heading home, was given the nod by manager Sean O'Driscoll.

Speaking to BBC Sport straight after the final whistle, the striker, who replaced Steve Fletcher, said: "As I came on, Fletch told me there was a lot of space and I could get a couple of goals."

As it transpired, Hayter claimed more than just "a couple of goals" during his brief, yet record-breaking cameo.

In the 86th minute, Brian Stock's cross from the right side of the penalty area picked out the forward, who sent a downward header inside the far post.

Then, from the resultant restart, visiting Wrexham lost possession quickly. Stock pounced on the loose ball, before sending a low pass through for Hayter. Having beat the offside trap, he drew goalkeeper Andy Dibble off his line and then slotted his effort underneath the experienced custodian.

He wasn't finished there, though. As the encounter ticked into its final minute, Cummings picked out Hayter with a square pass. On this occasion he went for power, drilling in his hat-trick goal via the base of the upright.

It meant that between his first and third goals, there had been just two minutes and 20 seconds, which was a Football League record for the quickest hat-trick ever scored.

Reflecting on his achievement with BBC Sport on the 10-year anniversary, Hayter said: "I scored with my first touch and two and a half minutes later I had a hat-trick - it was a bit surreal.

"I didn't realise quite how big it would be until after the game, and then the next day I had to come in and do loads of press and it all blew up."

And as for his parents, he added: "[They] still shake their heads about it. They came to the game, but because I was sub and hadn't got on they left early, they thought they'd get an earlier ferry.

"I think I came on just after they left, and they were listening in the car to BBC Radio Solent as the goals went in. I spoke to them afterwards and they were pleased, but also very disappointed."
