Former AC Milan and Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic dies aged 53 following a battle with leukaemia.

Former AC Milan boss Sinisa Mihajlovic has died at the age of 53 following a battle with leukaemia.

The former Lazio and Inter Milan defender revealed in 2019 that he had been diagnosed with leukaemia.

He had recovered following treatment, but in March, Mihajlovic announced that he had been diagnosed with the illness for a second time.

Mihajlovic won a number of trophies in his playing career, including the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade, and two Serie A titles in his time with Lazio and Inter.

He also made 63 appearances for the former Yugoslavia, representing the country at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

After retiring from playing, Mihajlovic went on to manage the likes of Serbia, Sampdoria, AC Milan and most recently Bologna, where he spent over three years until he was sacked in September.

In a statement, Serie A said: "His impact in our game, country and hearts will be forever remembered."

A number of former players and managers paid tribute to Mihajlovic, including his former Inter teammate Javier Zanetti, who said: "He was a good friend and now he is gone. He has done so much for football - big hug to his family."

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte posted on Instagram: "You've always been a warrior on the pitch and in life. Have a good trip, Sinisa."

A minute's silence was held for Mihajlovic before AC Milan's friendly with Liverpool in the Dubai Super Cup on Friday.
