Bill Roache leads tributes to Johnny Briggs

Bill Roache pays tribute to Johnny Briggs following the Coronation Street legend's death at the age of 85.

Bill Roache has paid tribute to an "impeccable" actor following the death of Coronation Street legend Johnny Briggs at the age of 85.

In a statement today, Briggs's family announced that he had died peacefully at home following what they described as "a long illness".

Briggs played the role of Mike Baldwin on the soap for 30 years, during which time the ruthless businessman had a long-standing rivalry with Roache's Ken Barlow.

"So sorry to hear about Johnny," Roache, 88, said in a statement.

"Mike Baldwin and Ken Barlow were arch enemies for many years, but as an actor, Johnny was impeccable, always good, and I was so fortunate to have worked with him for so many years.

"He was a strong character who will be greatly missed.

"I send my love to Johnny on his journey and to all those who are bound to miss him, he was an iconic Coronation Street character. Love you Johnny!"

The character of Mike exited the soap in 2006 in a storyline that saw him suffer Alzheimer's disease, ultimately dying in the arms of Ken on the cobbles.
