The BBC announces the launch of Radio 1 Relax, a new 24-hour stream dedicated to mental wellbeing.

The BBC has announced the launch of a new 24-hour stream dedicated to mental wellbeing called Radio 1 Relax.

The new service, which launches at 5pm today, will be available through the BBC Sounds app and include programmes dedicated to motivation and decompression.

In the early hours of the morning, Radio 1 Relax will feature two hours of 'Sleepscapes' followed by an hour of ASMR between 2am and 3am.

"The challenges of the last year have meant more young people than ever are seeking out content centred around wellbeing and relaxation," said Radio 1 head Aled Haydn Jones.

"The titles we've launched during the past twelve months with that in mind have proved incredibly popular, so I'm pleased we're able to put it all into one stream on BBC Sounds, making it as easy as possible for our audience to find and enjoy."

The BBC is usually required to seek Ofcom approval when it launches new stations, however the launch of "24-hour streams" through BBC Sounds appears to avoid the necessity of that step.

Nevertheless, following the launch of the dedicated Radio 1 Dance stream last autumn, the regulator announced plans to consider the service's "market position".
