Showtime has confirmed plans to launch several new series based in the universe of serial killer drama Dexter.
The show, which starred Michael C Hall as the eponymous benevolent serial killer, originally ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013.
A 10-episode revival called Dexter: New Blood aired in 2021 with Hall reprising his role, although its conclusion - with Dexter being killed by his son Harrison (Jack Alcott) - was poorly received by fans.
Showtime has now confirmed ambitious plans to continue the franchise, however, with Dexter: New Blood being reworked to centre around Harrison, who moves to New York City and battles the same internal demons as his late father.
Dexter: Origins, meanwhile, is a new prequel show that will chart a young Dexter's graduation from college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of the characters seen in the original series.
The network said that it is also working on spinoff projects centred around other characters from the Dexter universe, including a potential series following the makings of the notorious Trinity Killer (John Lithgow).
"The Dexter saga has been an undeniable creative and popular success for Showtime, both in its original, groundbreaking form and the record-setting Dexter: New Blood," said Showtime president Chris McCarthy.
"The series is a rich foundation for other shows in the lane of complex, subversive antiheroes that Showtime has always done so brilliantly."
Clyde Phillips - exec producer and showrunner of the original show - is overseeing development of the new series.
