The BBC confirms that breakout reality show The Traitors will return for a second series with Claudia Winkleman.

The BBC has officially confirmed the renewal of breakout reality series The Traitors for a second series.

The format - hosted by Claudia Winkleman - sees a group of strangers brought together at a Scottish castle with the aim of figuring out who among them is a secret 'Traitor'.

As the series progresses, the Traitors "murder" their fellow contestants while trying to remain undetected, all in the hopes of stealing the big cash prize on offer.

The first series aired just before Christmas and was a word-of-mouth hit, averaging over 5.4m viewers per episode and becoming the BBC's biggest entertainment launch in two years.

"I can't wait to go back to the castle to watch people play the greatest game on television," said Winkleman. "I'm knitting a high funnel sweater immediately."

Exec producer Stephen Lambert added: "We were delighted so many viewers of BBC One and BBC iPlayer loved the first season. They told us they enjoyed the drama and entertainment of watching our players judge each other, often leaping to false conclusions, but also forming alliances and real friendships.

"We're excited to be making a second season with Claudia as together we build on the success of the first."

The 12-episode second series will be filmed later this summer and is expected to air on BBC One at the end of the year.
