Christine McVie, responsible for some of Fleetwood Mac's most iconic hits, dies at the age of 79 after "a short illness".

Fleetwood Mac singer Christine McVie has died at the age of 79 following what has been described as "a short illness".

The star was responsible for writing some of the iconic band's most recognisable hits, including 'Little Lies', 'Everywhere' and 'Songbird'.

A statement issued by McVie's family said: "She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th following a short illness. She was in the company of her family.

"We kindly ask that you respect the family's privacy at this extremely painful time and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being."

A message from the band posted to social media read: "There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie.

"She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life.

"We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed."

McVie left Fleetwood Mac in 1998 citing a fear of flying but reunited with the band in 2014 and performed with them on their last tour in 2018.
