A de-aged version of Harrison Ford will be seen for 25 minutes as part of the new Indiana Jones film, it is revealed.

A de-aged version of Harrison Ford will appear for an extended 25-minute sequence in the new Indiana Jones movie.

The film - the fifth and final instalment of the franchise - has employed innovative VFX technology, which combed hundreds of hours of archive footage of Ford in order to apply a youthful filter to the actor, making him appear as he did when the first few movies were released in the 1980s.

Speaking to Total Film, director James Mangold revealed that Dial of Destiny will open in 1944 with a young Indy escaping a castle inhabited by the Nazis, before jumping forward to 1969 with scenes performed by the present-day Ford, aged 80.

"I just shot him, and he just pretended that he was 35," he said of the technology. "It was an incredible technology, and, in many ways, I just didn't think about it. I just focused on shooting what's [approximately] a 25-minute opening extravaganza that was my chance to just let it rip.

"The goal was to give the audience a full-bodied taste of what they missed so much. Because then when the movie lands in 1969, they're going to have to make an adjustment to what it is now, which is different from what it was."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is released on June 28.
