Avatar: The Way of Water pulls in more than £500m at the global box office in its first week of release.

Avatar: The Way of Water has now generated more than half a billion pounds at the box office worldwide.

The highly-anticipated sequel was released last week and has already managed box office receipts of $182.9m (£152m) in the US and $426.8m (£354.6m) elsewhere.

The combined total of $609.7m (£506.6m) by the end of Wednesday keeps the movie on track to post $1 billion (£831m) by the end of the year.

Director James Cameron has claimed that the film will need to hit receipts of $2 billion just to break even, however - a feat that would require it being among the top five highest-grossing films of all time.

The original movie, released in 2009, is the highest-grossing film of all time with revenue of almost $3 billion.
