Sometimes, a sport takes the world by storm. It inspires generation after generation. Not only does it grow culturally, but it translates into multiple other formats like film, influential celebrity icons, gaming platforms, and even the music industry. Soccer is one of the largest, global influential platforms to ever step foot into the world of sport. People love the players, they adore the game and it can be used for good. Given its iconic status, soccer naturally made its way to our screens, and here are some of the best soccer movies ever made.

The soccer culture

As mentioned above, soccer has firmly found its place in world culture. There are tournaments to follow, games to attend, local teams to support, and players to follow but there are also other recognisable and relevant formats too. Like most sports, there is a big scope for placing bets and tapping into a different version of fun behind the scenes. Not only will it mean the game is higher stakes, but it just adds a bit of spice on top of the pre-existing drumroll. There are plenty of betting offers for new customers that allow fans to place bets on their favorite teams. Apart from providing you with a bit of fun, betting also allows you to test your soccer knowledge.
Considering the fact that soccer is by far the most popular sport on the planet, there are plenty of competitions to wager on and all of them are eligible for the aforementioned betting offers. All you have to do is register an account.

Aside from placing bets, soccer has impacted significant platforms in education, society, and general culture. The following movies are soccer-centric and a must-see for any avid fan.

The movie list

All worth a watch, these movies embrace the art and societal tales of soccer.

One: Green Street Hooligans

Hooligans, otherwise known as prone to violent trouble stirrers, are not a thing to be glorified. Yet, somehow against the odds, this movie manages to paint them in a semi-sympathetic, informative, and almost compelling light to the audience. It is English-centric, focussing on the main character who flies to England and becomes ensconced in the West Ham football club. It is worth a watch if you are interested in the wider cultural impact of soccer, and a film that takes it back to its English roots.

Two: Bend it Like Beckham

Everyone who is a fan of soccer will know who Beckham is. Arguably one of the largest global status symbols there is, Beckham fans exist all over. Though he is not the main character, nor the sole focus of the film, this movie takes a look at women's football, in particular the youth branch. It is filled with highs and lows and an endearing cast. Tapping into other cultures, there is a Sikh main character and British one, both attempting to make their way in the world of soccer with one understandably facing more challenges than the other. For a different take on this world, it is definitely one to watch.

Three: Escape to Victory

If you are looking for an emotive film with brilliant storytelling based on real-life events, this film is for you. Set during World War Two, it sets the scene of Ukranian war-time prisoners pitted against a German guard's team. Though this format has been repeated in other contexts in plenty of soccer movies, this feels like the origin source. It has a brilliant cast, fantastic acting, and difficult but compelling themes all centered around soccer.

Four: The Big Green

For a family friendly option, The Big Green makes the list. It is not up there with the greats, but it has comedic aspects and is more than suitable to watch with the kids. It is, as you may have guessed, themed around a group of child misfits attempting to find success in a soccer team created and led by themselves. There are ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and ultimately they achieve what they set out to do.

Five: She's The Man

This one took soccer fans by surprise as an entirely enjoyable project from start to finish. A youthful cast, and a twist on a classic Shakespearean tale, did not exactly paint the picture of a classic soccer movie, but it certainly delivered. Following along the themes of Twelfth Night, the main character pretends to be a male student to gain access to a brilliant soccer training programme. Hilarity ensues, a love interest is formed, and in the end female empowerment wins the day. It is family friendly, but also a good watch in a social situation.

These five films are a brilliant representation of what soccer movies have to offer. There are more, but these top five made the list because of what they embody and how they portray the sport.
