Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod reveals details of a shock new storyline for Emma and Faye.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has given extensive teasers about what's to come on the soap in early 2022 - with a "life-changing" course of events set to befall Emma (Alexandra Mardell) and Faye (Ellie Leach).

Since her release from prison at the end of last year, Faye has been learning to drive - and it's been clear that she's not particularly proficient behind the wheel.

In scenes being broadcast this week, Faye and passenger Emma accidentally knock down an old man in the street - and even though he gets back on his feet, it sets in motion a devastating chain of events.

"It becomes this terrible life-changing event that throws them into a total nightmare of secrecy, dilemmas and a cover-up," MacLeod told reporters. "These two likeable, decent but hapless young women are miles out of their depth and there are serious consequences.

"The scripts are exciting and complicated – and funny as Emma is hapless. It's quirky but at the bottom of it, it will trigger a seismic event of their lives.

"When you watch it happen, what you will feel that the decisions they make, when they add them up, it turns into a total nightmare. There are witnesses who can incriminate them which is a nightmare when it goes worse.

"I love stories that crash land out of thin air – sometimes they take years to manifest. The characters in the middle - Emma and Faye - are in the beginnings of a close friendship. It's a story about cementing and challenging that friendship."

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
