Streaming giant Netflix reportedly begins making tentative enquiries about acquiring live sports rights.

Netflix has reportedly begun making tentative bids for the rights to a number of live sporting events.

The streaming giant has largely stayed out of any form of live broadcasting so far, while rivals such as Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+ have secured major rights including the Premier League, Champions League and NFL in recent years.

According to Deadline, Netflix has now softened its stance and has been "quietly looking into acquiring the rights to a number of leagues and events" over the last few months.

With most major competitions already tied up in long-term deals, the publication says that Netflix is pursuing more modest targets and has held talks over several tennis tournaments and the World Surf League.

A source at the company said: "Sports is the baseline now, we all know it, and finding the right properties, the right leagues is a priority, but it is always a question of the right league, the right deal."

Netflix currently has around 223 million subscribers worldwide.
