Chris Mason will take over from Laura Kuenssberg as the BBC's new Political Editor next month, it is announced.

Chris Mason is to take over as the new Political Editor at the BBC from next month, it has been announced.

The 41-year-old, who hails from Yorkshire, has served as a political correspondent at the corporation for the last 10 years and also hosts Radio 4's Any Questions?

Earlier this year Laura Kuenssberg confirmed that she was planning to step down from one of the biggest jobs in on-screen broadcasting after seven years, and she has since been named as the replacement for Andrew Marr on BBC One Sunday mornings.

"What a tremendous privilege to take on what, for me, is the most extraordinary job in British broadcasting and journalism," said Mason. "I clamber upon the shoulders of giants like Laura, Nick [Robinson] and Andrew with a smattering of trepidation and a shedload of excitement and enthusiasm.

"To lead the best team of journalists in the business on the best news patch of the lot is something I'd never even dared dream of. I can't wait to get started."

Jonathan Munro, the interim director of BBC News, said: "Chris has been an exceptional correspondent in an extraordinary time for British politics.

"His calm, incisive analysis and signature candid style have been invaluable for audiences when navigating complex stories.

"His ambition and vision for the Political Editor role is really exciting and I wish him every success in the new post."

Mason takes over from Kuenssberg early next month after her final assignment in the role covering the local elections.
