Channel 5 has scheduled a fast-turnaround documentary about the horror currently unfolding in the North Atlantic.

A distress call went out on Sunday after a submersible carrying five people on a journey to explore the wreck of the Titanic lost all communications with the outside world.

Since then there has been a momentous undertaking, involving multiple countries and specialist machinery, to locate the lost vehicle beneath the ocean before its air supply runs out.

The submersible is less than 7 metres long and carries enough oxygen to last its occupants for around 96 hours - meaning that as it stands, that air supply will expire at around midday UK time on Thursday.

Channel 5 has now scheduled a programme about the tragedy for Thursday night - somewhat controversially, airing just hours after the hour supply may have run out if those missing have not been rescued.

Ian Rumsey, MD of content at producers ITN, said: "Our expertise and heritage in fast-turnaround documentaries and reputation for responsible filmmaking means we always treat such stories with great sensitivity.

"This programme will chart everything from the exploration itself, to the rise of extreme tourism, to the rescue attempts, but above all it will tell a very human story that has captured the nation which is about five people, all with families, who are trapped at the bottom of the ocean."

Titanic Sub: Lost at Sea airs Thursday at 7pm on Channel 5.
