Disney announces host of new Star Wars TV spinoffs, two new films

Disney confirms a whole host of Star Wars projects, including multiple TV series for Disney+ and two new big-screen movies.

Disney has surprised Star Wars fans with the announcement of a host of new TV spinoff series and two new big-screen movies.

Rogue Squadron, following a new generation of starfighters, will be released in cinemas in December 2023, with Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins overseeing the project.

The second film is from Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), which promises to be his own "idiosyncratic take" on the film franchise's universe.

The TV projects - all for Disney+ - are headlined by Obi-Wan Kenobi, set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and starring Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor.

Andor is a 12-episode Rogue One spinoff based around Diego Luna's popular character, while Lando is an "event series" focussing on the franchise's iconic con artist Lando Calrissian.

Two new series set within the timeline of The Mandalorian are Rangers of the New Republic from Jon Favreau, and Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson, while the third season of The Mandalorian - currently in pre-production - has been confirmed for a Christmas 2021 premiere.

The Acolyte is "a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era" from Russian Doll's Leslye Headland and there will also be a R2-D2 and C-3PO adventure in A Droid Story, which is described as an "epic journey" introducing a new hero who is guided by the pair.
