Matthew Wolfenden is to leave his role as David Metcalfe on Emmerdale after 17 years.

Matthew Wolfenden is to leave his role as David Metcalfe on EastEnders after 17 years, it has emerged.

David - the son of Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) - has been a regular in the Dales since 2006, getting married three times and having two children, in addition to adoptive son Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant).

According to The Sun, Wolfenden decided to quit after becoming "bored" by David's recent storylines, which have included him getting a driving ban and suffering financial difficulties.

"Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change," a source told the newspaper.

"He hasn't been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.

"He's a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next.

"He's very excited about the opportunities available.

"He's only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It's possible David could be killed off."

Emmerdale continues weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
