Emmerdale legend Paula Tilbrook dies, aged 89

Paula Tilbrook - aka Emmerdale gossip Betty Eagleton - dies of natural causes at the age of 89.

Paula Tilbrook, who played Betty Eagleton in Emmerdale for 21 years, has died at the age of 89.

The actress passed away in December but news of her death was only announced by her family in industry magazine The Stage today.

"The family of Paula Tilbrook are sad to confirm the peaceful passing of their beloved Paula," they said in a statement.

"She died of natural causes a few months ago at home with her loved ones beside her. The family respectfully requests privacy at this difficult time."

Village gossip Betty debuted in 1994 and formed a double act with Seth (Stan Richards), deciding to leave the soap in 2015.

The character was last referenced in February when Betty rang Laurel to inform her that her father-in-law Sandy had died.
