On Monday's episode of RAW, it was announced that John Cena would face Dean Ambrose in a single's match at Hell in a Cell.
Spoilers indicate that a stipulation will be added on SmackDown on Friday, whereby the winner of the match will be the first man to climb a pole to secure a contract which guarantees them a one-on-one match with Seth Rollins inside the cell structure in the main event of the October 26 pay-per-view.
The Ambrose and Cena mini-feud has become an intriguing subplot to the narrative that both men want to take revenge on Mr. Money in the Bank.
The initial bout at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, promises to be intriguing also, considering that it pits WWE's two top faces against each other.
And that is what Cena and Ambrose are in the absence of the injured Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan, with the latter having established himself as a serious player with his entertainingly relentless, and relentlessly entertaining, harassing of Rollins and his anti-authority antics since The Shield split earlier this year.
Rarely do the company's two top good guys meet one-on-one at a PPV, especially when the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is not involved.
This provides an interesting dimension to a match that is also significant because it is the biggest yet in the rapidly-thriving single's career of 'The Lunatic Fringe.'
Quite simply, Ambrose must win. Firstly for the practically of the storyline, with fans having invested months into his rivalry with Rollins, which needs a payoff.
The 20ft-high confines of the Hell in a Cell cage, from which there is no way for Rollins to escape, or, more importantly, The Authority to enter, is the perfect setting for the final chapter of a feud that has been so animus and vicious.
WWE fans want to see Ambrose finally get his hands on the man who stabbed him in the back in May and has since sidelined him with a serious head injury.
A Cena versus Rollins matchup is far less appealing at this time and can be saved for when their paths are sure to cross over the WWE title in the future. Anything other than an Ambrose win will leave the crowd flat for the rest of the PPV.
Secondly, Ambrose benefits more from a victory than 15-time world champion Cena possibly could at this stage of his decorated career.
Pinfall success, as opposed to pain-inflicting success, over Rollins is less imperative, but WWE have the chance to take the leap of faith with Ambrose with two wins in huge and likely memorable matches on the same night.
It could be the same type of career-defining night that Bryan enjoyed at SummerSlam 2013, and Cena must now give Ambrose the same rub.
The Rock returned to RAW on Monday night to a thunderous reception rarely received by any full-time stars on the current WWE roster.
WWE have the next guy who can generate that sort of response on their hands in Ambrose. If they do HITC right, it could be a big step to him reaching that level.
