Former British number one Johanna Konta announces her retirement from tennis at the age of 30.

Great Britain's Johanna Konta has announced her retirement from competitive tennis at the age of 30.

The Australian-born player reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open, as well as a quarter-final US Open finish in 2019.

Konta rose to fourth in the singles rankings in 2017, but injuries and COVID-19 meant she struggled to hit the same heights during the latter stages of her career.

The 30-year-old wrote on social media: "My playing career has come to an end, and I am so incredibly grateful for the career it turned out to be.

"All the evidence pointed towards me not "making" it in this profession. However, my luck materialised in the people that came into my life and impacted my existence in ways that transcended tennis.

"Through my own resilience and through the guidance of others, I got to live my dreams. I got to become what I wanted and said as a child. How incredibly fortunate I count myself to be. How grateful I am."

Konta retires after dropping to 113th in the world rankings, with her final singles title coming at the Nottingham Open in June of this year, and she won a total of four singles titles on the WTA Tour.
