Gavin Henson has admitted that he is behind positional rivals in the race for a World Cup place.

Gavin Henson has claimed that he is behind his positional rivals in the race for inclusion in Warren Gatland’s World Cup squad.

The centre is likely to receive a start for Wales in their World Cup warm-up clash against England at Cardiff on Saturday, but has admitted that his World Cup aims would take “something special”.

“There are three centres ahead of me at the moment,” Henson said. “And I need to turn the tables, showing something a bit different.”

Henson last played for Wales against the Barbarians last June, his first international game since the 2009 Six Nations tournament.

Although Henson is currently clubless, he was named in Warren Gatland’s preliminary World Cup squad of 45 players but has had to fit training around the filming of new reality TV show The Bachelor.

Henson this week revealed that he plans on a return to former club Ospreys.

Warren Gatland will name his 30-man World Cup squad on August 22.
