Mitt Romney praises "reasonably safe" Sochi Games

Former United States presidential candidate Mitt Romney praises the level of security at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Former United States presidential candidate Mitt Romney has praised the level of security at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Romney, who ran unsuccessfully against current American President Barack Obama in the 2012 national elections, also defended his country's stance over security concerns ahead of the Games.

The former Massachusetts governor told NBC: "When you have the kind of specific threats that were leveled at the Games, you have to take them very seriously.

"At the same time, I think Russia has shown not only through the application of their security forces but also through their intelligence work that they have the capacity to keep the Games reasonably safe."

Prior to the start of the Olympics, the United States government warned airlines flying into Russia that explosives could be hidden in toothpaste tubes and smuggled into the European country.
