Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy criticises the media for their incorrect use of his photo while reporting on the rape case involving Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy says that the media mistaking him for Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy is "highly symbolic".

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the latter was now being charged with six counts of rape and is due to go on trial in January.

However, a number of outlets wrongly used a photo of Chelsea stopper Mendy in association with the story, errors which have been heavily criticsed.

Edouard has now taken to social media to speak about his disappointment, acknowledging that he felt "sad" to see such an occurrence in 2021.

Writing on Instagram, the 29-year-old said: "Sad to see that in 2021, in France as well as in England, for some, black people have neither names nor distinct faces.

"These 'mistakes' of photos appear anecdotal, but actually they are quite the opposite, they are highly symbolic. It's not that complicated to differentiate two faces, especially when the football jersey is of valuable help!"

As well as the Chelsea goalkeeper, Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy also had a photo of himself wrongly associated with an article on the same story.
