Australian rookie Matt Jones holed a pitch shot to win the Houston Open after a dramatic playoff with Matt Kuchar.

The 33-year-old chipped in off the green to earn his maiden win on the PGA tour in fairytale fashion, having already sunk a 45-foot birdie to bring the encounter into a playoff after Kuchar bogeyed the 18th.

The American, who began the final round in Texas with a six-shot lead over Jones, finished up on -15 with the Aussie, two strokes ahead of Spaniard Sergio Garcia.

As a result of the win, Jones earned qualification into his first ever Masters tournament at Augusta next week.
