Prince Harry hits out at the use of the term 'Megxit' to describe his relocation with Meghan Markle from the UK to the USA.

Prince Harry has hit out at the term 'Megxit' to describe his decision to relocate from the UK to California with wife Meghan Markle last year.

The pair stepped down as senior members of the Royal family and moved to Los Angeles, arguing that their decision was chiefly made to avoid UK press intrusion.

Harry and Meghan have since launched a joint-career in the entertainment industry, signing lucrative deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify to produce and appear in a variety of TV and audio programmes.

The whole affair has come to be referred to as 'Megxit' - a play on the word Brexit - by the media, but Harry has told an internet conference that he believes that the term is "misogynistic".

"Maybe people know this, maybe they don't, but the term Megxit was or is a misogynistic term," he said.

"And it was created by a troll, amplified by royal correspondents and it grew and grew and grew onto mainstream media, but it began with a troll."

On the media in general, he added: "I learned from a very early age that the incentives of publishing are not necessarily aligned with the incentives of truth.

"My experience, I guess, has been more pre-social media around the UK press, who sadly conflate profit with purpose and news with entertainment.

"And they don't report the news, they create it. And they've successfully turned fact-based news into opinion-based gossip with devastating consequences for the country."

Harry has previously faced accusations of hypocrisy over his decision to work with Netflix, which streams The Crown, a drama featuring a portrayal of his late mother Princess Diana.
