Love Island producers are reportedly open to having gay contestants take part in this year's series.

ITV has confirmed that it is accepting applications from gay singletons for the new series of Love Island.

The dating show is returning to ITV2 this June after being cancelled in 2020 due to coronavirus - and producers are thought to have received in excess of 100,000 applications from would-be contestants.

According to the Daily Star, for the first time the net has been cast to include members of the gay community as part of the audition process, despite executive producer Richard Cowles having previously said that the inclusion of gay couples would bring "logistical challenges" to the format.

An ITV spokesperson told the newspaper: "Our only stipulation for applicants on Love Island is that they are over 18, single and looking for love."

A recent report suggested that the new series will begin on June 28 and last for eight weeks.
